DANIEL STRAUB — DIRECTOR, PRODUCER
Daniel (he/him) is a Los Angeles based director and producer who has worked in documentary for more than 10 years. With a sharp eye for stories that give form to environmental racism, injustice in the healthcare system, and other insidious issues, Daniel has dedicated his career to using film and television as a vehicle for driving systemic change.
Daniel directed and produced OUT OF PLAIN SIGHT, a feature-length documentary for the Los Angeles Times with his frequent collaborator and brother, Emmy® Award winning director of photography Austin Straub, and L.A. Times Environmental Reporter and Pulitzer Prize Finalist Rosanna Xia. The film had its world premiere on November 16, 2024 at DOC NYC and continues its festival run at Slamdance 2025 in Los Angeles.
When Daniel isn’t directing, you may find him hiking with his dog in the Eastern Sierras, drinking coffee, developing new projects, writing about himself in the third person, or seeking representation.
OUT OF PLAIN SIGHT - DIRECTOR, PRODUCER
A feature documentary from the Academy Award® Winning Los Angeles Times directed by Daniel Straub and Pulitzer Prize finalist Rosanna Xia, with cinematography by Emmy® Award Winning director of photography Austin Straub.
OUT OF PLAIN SIGHT is a cinematic exposé of an environmental disaster lurking just off the coast of Southern California.
Not far from Catalina Island, aboard one of the most-advanced research ships in the world, David Valentine discovered a corroded barrel on the seafloor that gave him chills. The full environmental horror sharpens into greater clarity once he calls Los Angeles Times journalist Rosanna Xia, who pieces together a stunning revelation that dates back to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring: For decades, as many as half a million barrels of toxic waste had been quietly dumped into the ocean, and people today must reckon with the consequences.
